Bisexual Artists That are Dominating Hollywood

In the wake of earth-shattering revelations that Kevin Spacey is a sexual predator (jk, who is surprised that this douche came out as gay to deflect allegations of assault?), it’s nice to remind heterosexuals - as well as our own community - that being homo does not equate to being a predator.

In that vein, we have compiled a list of inspirational bisexual artists that aren’t problematic (as far as we know), and who are dominating Hollywood in a not-lie-on-top-of-you-while-you-sleep kinda way.

Of course, this is only a tiny list in comparison to the thousands of folx who are taking H’wood by storm and are deserving of the accolades they receive. Our community is facing some fights that we’re used to fighting, and some that are new; but there is good in the world, there are celebrities we can look up to, and we can support them, love them, and ship them.

Sapphire

The author of Push (which inspired the Oscar-winning film, Precious) is known for being openly bi. She is a sexual abuse survivor, and sources state that her candor about her sexuality is often disarming, considering how difficult her upbringing was; we love you, Sapphire, and are glad to have you batting for our team

Megan Mullally

The star of the revitalized Will & Grace is shy about her sex life with bear daddy Nick Offerman - and she is an out and proud bisexual woman. She spoke with The Advocate in 1999 and stated, “I consider myself bisexual, and my philosophy is, everyone innately is.” That sentiment may not be in line with 2017, but Megan isn’t wrong about the sexuality spectrum having plenty of gray areas.

Carrie Brownstein

The star of Portlandia and girl rock group Sleater-Kinney is often mistaken for being gay; however, much like bisexual rock god Freddie Mercury, she is actually bi, and she is ours, let us HAVE THIS. Brownstein stated in a 2010 interview with Willamette Week that she thinks “it’s weird, because no one’s actually ever asked me. People just always assume, like, you’re this or that. It’s like, ‘OK. I’m bisexual.’” Girl, so am I, we have so much in common, want to be BFF or go out or whatever? Love you, mean it.

Alan Cumming

Okay, Cumming is a gimme, but how could he not be mentioned? He’s gorgeous, and very open and proud of his bisexuality. In fact, he may be one of the most outspoken celebs on the topic, as bisexuality is so often swept under the rug or largely ignored based on who the person is dating at the time. While formerly married to a woman, Cumming is now married to a man, yet has said in an interview, “I still define myself as a bisexual even though I have chosen to be with [my husband] Grant. I’m sexually attracted to the female form even though I am with a man, and I just feel that bisexuals have a bad rap.” He ain’t wrong.

Halsey

The outspoken singer talks openly about her bipolar disorder and her bisexuality; for the latter in particular, erasure within the LGBTQ community. She’s a fascinating and often polarizing figure, but you can’t argue that the girl isn’t a hustler. She’s currently on tour, has a new album out now, and has a background that would be interesting enough for any Lifetime original movie. BRB, gonna go listen to some Halsey and see what the kids are into these days.

Meshell Ndegeocello

If you haven’t heard of Meshell Ndegeocello by now, get familiar. She’s a singer/songwriter/bassist who has received multiple Grammy nods for her music, which can be found in classics like How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Love & Basketball, High Learning, and Batman & Robin. Her “provocative” songs are often about politics, race, misogyny, feminism, and “stealing another woman’s man.” She told the LA Times in ‘93 that she was “the ultimate misfit,” because, as she says, “I’m black. I’m a woman. I’m a bisexual. I like being a misfit. It’s more fun. It keeps you striving.”

Lauren Jauregui

Hiiii hallloooooooooo, I have been sleeping on Lauren Jauregui. I low-key liked Fifth Harmony for the most part before writing this article, and - not gonna lie - have quite a few of their songs on quite a few of my playlists. But now I know about the Jauregui collab with Halsey on the girls-loving-girls song “Strangers,” I have a new bi girl crush (sorry, Olivia Wilde). And now I also have a new song to add to my PRIDE playlist.

Shannon Purser

No #JusticeForBarb needed here, because honey, we are living for Shannon Purser. The Stranger Things and Riverdale star recently came out as bisexual on Twitter, stating, “I don't normally do this, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get personal. I've only just recently come out as bisexual to my family and friends. It's something I am still processing and trying to understand, and I don't like talking about it too much. I'm very, very new to the LGBT community.” All you need to know is that we like glitter and death dropping at parties. Welcome home.
